Academy collects Green Flag Award.

Mr Best and his merry band of pupil eco-champions were celebrating their Green Flag Award in recognition of the Academy’s commitment to sustainability, bio-diversity and environmental action. Head Boy, Sean and House Captain, Joe, accompanied Mr Best (Eco-schools Co-ordinator), Principal, Matthew Pitts and Chair of the Academy’s Board of Governors, Karen Henderson to meet the Mayor, Gillian McCollum at the awards event in Bangor Elim last week. The report from the Green Flag award body said:

“Bangor Academy and 6th Form College showed great progress within planting initiatives such as the school Orchard, Willow coppicing area, wildflower garden and raised beds. It was a particular strength to see how these areas were used for projects for the art department and for education around growing your own produce. The schools efforts to go outside the school grounds when engaging in community planting at the Valentine playing fields further spread the impact on biodiversity that pupils made.

The school’s creation and continued use of the outdoor classroom was a particular highlight around work done within outdoor learning alongside opportunities provided to pupils to engage with the outdoors. An extensive range of after-schools clubs are on offer in line with the Healthy Living Topic, alongside some options for pupils to engage in sporting tournaments during lunch time.

The school also ventured further outside of their 3 chosen topics, with some good activities around Global Perspective and Waste.”
